7 Ways You're Using Your Clarisonic Seriously Wrong

Clarisonic devices sit pretty on many a bathroom sink, eager to deep-clean the pores of their owners every morning and night. Though the devices seem pretty straightforward to use, it turns out that even the most seasoned Clarisonic users may not be in-the-know on the best way to operate them. Think you’re missing some crucial steps in your daily Clarisonic routine? Ahead, seven common mistakes that are keeping you from getting the most out of your favorite sonic cleansing brush.

Mistake #1: You’re not using the right brush head

Clarisonic offers a plethora of brush heads that are suited for a range of skin types and areas of skin, in addition to addressing various skin concerns—acne, dryness, and large pores, just to name a few. Depending on your skin needs and type, make sure to use the proper brush head to achieve skin perfection. Failure to use the proper brush head can have devastating consequences, or simply not give you the right amount of deep-clean benefits. If you’re unsure about which brush head to choose, talk to a dermatologist or Clarisonic retail representative for additional guidance.

Mistake #2: You’re not cleaning your brush head properly

Once you’ve got the proper brush head squared away, you’ll want to make sure you’re cleaning it properly. After every use, cleanse the brush head with a little bit of soapy water to keep the bristles clear of oil and residue. Once a week, remove the brush head and wash the handle using warm, soapy water to remove any residue buildup there. Be sure to clean the well under the brush head as well.

Mistake #3: You’re not changing your brush head often enough

If you’ve been using the same Clarisonic brush head for over three months, it’s time to change it. The brand recommends swapping out brush heads every three months to ensure that the bristles don’t become dull and fatigued. Think of it like your toothbrush. After a while, the bristles can stop working as effectively.

Mistake #4: You’re removing your makeup first

Clarisonic devices remove makeup six times better than hands alone (or 11 times better with the Smart Profile device), so there’s simply no need to add an extra step of taking off your makeup first. It’s not the end of the world if you do, but why waste your precious time?

Mistake #5: You’re not using the right cleanser

Clarisonic offers a wide range of specially-formulated cleansers to pair with their devices for an optimal experience, however, it’s perfectly fine to use any non-abrasive cleanser of your choosing. What you should steer clear of are exfoliating cleansers with microbeads or rough particles.

Mistake #6: You’re pressing too hard

Everyone loves a deep clean, but pressing the brush head into the skin won’t make it work any better. In fact, doing so can block the oscillation motion and keep the device from doing its job.

Mistake #7: You’re sharing your brush head with your boyfriend

Some things in life are meant to be shared, but your Clarisonic is definitely not one of them. To avoid the risk of transferring skin oils and residue from one complexion to the next (gross!) its best to stick to your own device. Why not gift your boyfriend with his own Clarisonic? The Alpha Fit is designed specifically to clean men’s thicker, oilier skin.
