3 Ways a Humidifier Can Benefit Your Skin in the Summer

Humidifiers are often associated with winter, when the low-moisture air can cause dry skin to feel, well, even more dry. But what if we told you that humidifiers can benefit your skin even in the summer? According to Skincare.com consulting dermatologist Dr. Dhaval Bhanusali, humidifiers can be a huge help in keeping our complexions hydrated all year long. Below, we’re sharing three reasons why you shouldn’t wait for winter to invest in a humidifier.

Reason to Use a Humidifier: Hot Dry Climates Can Dehydrate Skin

Some parts of the world experience low-moisture air all year long. If you live in a dry, arid climate, you may experience dry, itchy, flaky, cracked or peeling skin, and a humidifier can help. “Humidifiers add moisture back into the environment [and can help] your skin to retain hydration much better than it otherwise would,” Dr. Bhanusali says.

Remember, too, that when skin is dehydrated, you may experience an increase in oil production, so a humidifier isn’t just beneficial for dry skin types.

Reason to Use a Humidifier: Air Conditioning Also Dehydrates Skin

While air conditioners can be a necessity in the summer, they can also cause the moisture levels in the air to decline — just like artificial heating can — and subsequently disrupt the moisture barrier and leave the skin feeling dry. This is why some skin-care fanatics are known to keep a small humidifier in the bedroom, and some even keep portable ones on their desks. The fact that many of us will be spending more time indoors this summer to socially distance is even more of a reason to get that humidifier out.

Reason to Use a Humidifier: Your Lips Can Still Get Chapped in the Summer

Like the rest of your skin, your lips can be more prone to dehydration in dry climates and after prolonged exposure to the sun. While applying lip balm religiously can help the cause, humidifiers can address the issue head-on and promote a soft, smooth and hydrated pout.
