Have dry skin on your cheeks, clogged pores on your nose and a few fine lines on your forehead? One mask isn’t going to be able to address all those concerns — but multi-masking can. What started as a trending hashtag on social media has since turned into a mainstream way to mask. Learn exactly what multi-masking is, who can benefit from it and how to do it, below.

What Is Multi-Masking?

Consider multi-masking a customized way to use your face masks. It’s where you use different types of masks (think: detoxifying, hydrating and exfoliating) on the different zones of your face, based on the specific needs in that area.

Think about it: The skin on your T-zone doesn’t usually need the same type of mask as the skin on your cheeks, so multi-masking is a great way to address a bunch of different skin concerns at once. Plus, it makes for a relaxing at-home experience.

Who Should Try Multi-Masking?

It doesn’t matter if your skin is oily or prone to dryness (or both!), anyone can benefit from layering on an assortment of face masks. Even if you don’t have multiple skin concerns spread out across your face, you can still try out multi-masking as a fun way to switch up your self-care Sunday routine.

How to Multi-Mask

Follow the two techniques below for the best multi-masking experience.

Zone Multi-Masking

Zone multi-masking is the more traditional way to approach the trend. The process involves applying different masks to specific areas of the face to target certain concerns. For example, if your cheeks are dry, apply a hydrating mask like the SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Mask on them.If your T-zone is particularly oily, try a detoxifying mask like the Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Mask to absorb excess shine. The best part is you can (and are supposed to!) wear the masks at the same time.

Layer Multi-Masking

The layer multi-masking technique involves using one mask at a time in succession. If you want to target the excess oil on your complexion, but then want to follow up with a hydrating formula after, this form of multi-masking is for you. First use a mattifying clay mask, like the L’Oréal Paris Skin Expert Pure Clay Purify & Mattify Mask, then rinse and apply a hydrating sheet mask afterwards. Our favorite is the Garnier SkinActive Moisture Bomb Super Hydrating Sheet Mask.
