Did you know that your scalp, just like the skin on your face and body, is susceptible to damage from UV rays? As it turns out, though, scalp sunscreen is a thing, and it’s actually very necessary, according to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Martha Viera. Ahead, we spoke with Dr. Viera about scalp and sun care things, including the skin-care benefits of a scalp sunscreen, why you need one and how to apply one — because, if we’re being honest, it seems kind of messy. Do You Really Need Scalp Sunscreen?“Definitely yes,” says Dr. Viera. “While the hair does help protect the scalp from some UV rays, that is not enough to protect the skin from the UV damage. It is very common to see skin cancer, including melanoma on the scalp as a result of sun damage.” How to Apply Scalp SunscreenThere are different types of scalp sunscreens that help make application easy. Dr. Viera says that the easiest products to apply are the scalp sunscreens that come in a stick or spray form, like the Coola Scalp and Hair Sunscreen Mist. She also mentions that it’s important to consider your skin type. If you have a sensitive scalp, Dr. Viera recommends using mineral sunscreen.  “Apply your sunscreen when your hair is dry on any thinning or balding spots and all around the hairline,” says Dr. Viera. Also, be sure to reapply at least every two hours  as directed on the packaging. For maximum protection, she also recommends wearing a hat with UPF 50 (ultraviolet light protective factor) or more after applying your sunscreen and take other sun protection measures.   Design: Hannah Packer Read More: This Is Why You Should Add a Scalp Oil Into Your Hair-Care RoutineThe Best Sunscreens for Broad-Spectrum Protection From Head to Toe6 SPF Products for People Who Hate Sunscreen
