Ask the Expert: What Is Whipped Sunscreen?

We all know we need to use broad-spectrum sunscreen day in and day out to help protect our skin against the signs of premature aging, sunburns, and even some cancers that could form as a result of prolonged and unprotected exposure to ultraviolet rays. The difficult part is not agreeing to the benefits of sunscreen—numerous studies have proven the worth and value of daily sunscreen use—but rather taking that knowledge and putting it into action. Too many of us end up ditching sunscreen in our daily routines, and much of that has to do with the consistency. People often complain about sunscreen being too thick and heavy on the skin, leading to clogged pores (even potential breakouts on acne-prone skin) and skin that feels suffocated.

As a response to the complaints, whipped sunscreen has arrived and could be the answer to your sunscreen woes. To find out for sure, we tapped board-certified dermatologist, and Skincare.com consultant, Dr. Ted Lain (@DrTedLain).

WHAT IS WHIPPED SUNSCREEN?

We’ve all seen sunscreen in its classic form, as well as in a few aerosol sprays and solid sticks, but this whipped formula is entirely new. Whipped sunscreen is pretty self explanatory. It’s sunscreen with an airy, whipped consistency. “Whipped sunscreen has nitrous oxide added to the can, allowing it to be released with the same consistency of whipped cream,” says Dr. Lain.

So, what’s the point of whipped sunscreen? We know it sounds a bit gimmicky, but this feather-light product may eliminate your ability to make excuses for ditching daily sunscreen applications. According to Dr. Lain, the whipped texture of this kind of sunscreen allows it to absorb onto your skin and be applied with ease.

The most important factor when it comes to choosing a sunscreen is its protection level, so while the consistency is helpful, it shouldn’t be the only factor you consider. Reach for a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, and reapply it prior to heading outdoors and at least every two hours. Any other benefits—whipped consistency, grease-free finish, paraben-free, oil-free, etc.—come secondary and are simply icing on the cake.
